We all need more storage, so why not look for key pieces of furniture that can double up as storage and something else, you get twice as much value for your money and more importantly, you get more storage and hopefully less clutter.
Window Seat Storage Boxes
The vision here is a bay window with a large storage box beneath with cushions on top so that you sit and look out of the window.
If you don’t have a bay window, this idea can work just as well, you just need a window with a space below.
Invest in a sturdy storage box with a lift up lid or even drawers below and add seat cushions or make your own custom seat with some foam cut to the correct size and cover with material that matches the colour in the room.
This can work in a living room, dining room or even a bedroom, this is an idea that kids would love and it is a great way of keeping toys and games tidily tucked away.
Beds with storage
The person who invented high sleeper beds is a genius.
What child wouldn’t love having to climb up to get up to their bed each night and what parent wouldn’t welcome the extra space and endless possibilities below?
There are numerous options available at different prices. Some come with additional furniture already attached such as a desk, shelving or even a chair bed for guests. Some have a curtain along the front, which can make a cool den and an even cooler space to hide toys.
There are also lots of adult beds with storage also available, which are a far cry from the traditional divan. Some mattresses cleverly lift up to reveal a huge space below and others have drawer space below.
Wooden bed frames may not have storage as part of the bed itself, but the space below can often be big enough to be utilised with anything from vacuum bags, plastic boxes or wooden drawers.
If you have never heard of a multitasking table, it is because it is one of those things that you can invent yourself.
Usually smaller, multitasking tables are tables which have a storage function added in.
A coffee table with shelves below, or space for a box underneath, can be perfect in the living room. It doesn’t have to be a table.
A small shelf unit, wooden storage box or even a small set of drawers can be used as a coffee table or side table whilst providing some extra storage space at the same time.
One of the earliest forms of storage, dating back to the 17th century, and the simple blanket box is still a useful piece of furniture.
These days of course, we are more selective about what we keep in them but the blanket box in it’s simplest form is a wooden chest with a hinged lid which can be a great place to store towels, linen, toys, in fact pretty much anything.
Why not use one to file all of your paperwork away or put one in the hallway to house shoes or sports kit.
The dual function comes from the fact that blanket boxes are often extremely sturdy and make great seats if you add a few cushions or maybe you can use it as a sideboard to display things on it or finally it could function as a coffee table or bedside table.
When it comes to the topic of dual purpose storage, the humble bookcase is the king. Whether you have a small set of shelves or something that covers a whole wall from floor to ceiling, a bookcase can be used in so many different ways.
Books of course are the obvious choice but you can keep CDs, DVDs, ornaments, magazines, paperwork and anything else that you need or want to keep in view.
Bookshelves can be used in the bedroom to house shoes, bags or toys or even in the kitchen to keep food and drinks in a sort of organised pantry.
In a study, it can be brilliant to keep your office supplies organised and the perfect space to display photos. Why not use it as a media centre with your TV, DVD player and games consoles all together in one place?
The beauty of the bookcase is that it can be used for one thing or a mixture and you can even buy baskets or boxes to slot onto the shelves to add even more storage.
Whatever your storage needs, when you are considering buying new furniture or even making better use of what you already have, think about whether the furniture can offer more that one purpose as this can make a huge impact on the storage in your home.
