Northcote is a popular range of kid’s storage furniture made up of white or light grey units which slot together. Options include a shoe storage cabinet, a cupboard with chalkboard doors, various shelves, cubbies and divider units. The furniture is made from painted MDF and is self-assembly.
You have to concede that the Northcote units look impressive from the promotional images but they are not cheap. Prices start at £75 for a single ‘skinny’ unit up to £155 for a corner unit.
The canvas drawers and storage baskets come in a range of designs also and this is one of the big selling points. Again though, the cost can add up when you consider how many you’ll need to buy.
All in all, though, the range takes some beating when it comes to versatility and good looks.
So what about the alternatives?
Looking around there are a few similar kinds of modular storage units for kids, although it’s hard to say if one is better than the other – it may be just a case of which you like the look of best?
The modular Uno S range from Stompa is pretty comprehensive with cube units, furniture and storage beds – all perfectly coordinated in white with pink, blue, purple and grey panels.
What I like about this range is the sheer choice of options, you don’t have to worry about clashing with other makes of furniture either. As anyone who’s tried doing this can attest, even basic white units can be difficult to match exactly.
Storage options start with a basic cube building up to a complete wall unit. There’s even a wardrobe and drawer chest.
Prices start at £70 for the single cube, up to £1,099 for an 8 unit combination. And, for choice and value, the Stompa range is second to none.
The Stuva storage range from Ikea is perhaps the best known of the four with the best range of options? Choose from a selection of drawer units, benches, shelves and combinations in a selection of fun colours which include bright green, blue, pink or white. One of the benefits of Stuva furniture is that it is made to suit a child’s height so they won’t struggle with putting things back where they belong!
Stuva units are made from a combination of particle board/MDF and are self-assembly. Prices start at £35 for a free-standing shelving unit to £438 for a full storage combination. Ikea are generally well-regarded with a good reputation for service and quality and with a ready availability of stock.
Another option, again from Great Little Trading Co, are Abbeville Cube Units which come in a variety of sizes and in white or grey.
Although cube storage units are not a new idea this range gives you a lot of options, especially when teamed up with the patterned storage cubes.
Once again, it’s not a cheap option with prices ranging from £115, for a 3 cube tower, to £295 for a 12 cube option. The addition of storage cubes also pushes up the cost – although they are optional and you may be able to get by with just a few of these?
So, as you’ll have gathered already, there isn’t a perfect option and none of them is cheap. You can, however, start off with just one or two items and add to them as you go.
