Bookcases are one of the most ubiquitous and versatile pieces of storage furniture you can buy. The choice is almost infinite too, no matter what your budget.
But if it’s solid wood you’re after the options are far fewer.
What’s more, some bookcases described as being solid wood are not solid wood at all. They may have a wood frame but often the shelves and panels are just a wood veneer.
This isn’t so bad as it sounds, especially in the case of some non-sustainable timbers such as oak, but it can be confusing.
Solid pine is, in general, the most affordable option and Indian hardwoods, such as sheesham and mango are also good value.
Oak, mahogany and teak tend to be the most expensive although a strategic use of veneers can bring the cost down quite a bit. The examples below though are solid wood, unless specified otherwise.
