It sometimes seems like the amount of clutter in the garage will always expand to fill every inch of available storage space so you can either give up and admit defeat or keep trying to keep on top of it.
If you choose the latter (you wouldn’t be reading this otherwise) then you’ll know there are plenty of cheap storage shelves on the market and, for general storage, that’s fine. However, for really heavy stuff it may be necessary to invest in some industrial strength shelving?
The usual DIY stores such as B&Q stock a fair selection of shelving priced from around £15 to £80 although they are predominantly made from plastic or very lightweight steel. The best value is probably the Avasco 5 Tier Boltless Shelf Unit at £30. The reviews are very positive but it’s worth noting that the shelves are only made from chipboard and although they claim the maximum weight per shelf is 265 Kg I find that hard to believe?
Heavy Duty Metal Storage Racking – this silver framed unit with 5 shelves isn’t bad value either. The shelves are MDF and quite strong. W75 x D30 x H172 cm. £23.03 from amazon.co.uk
Mammut Heavy-Duty Steel Shelving – a fairly good choice options with 3 colours and 4 sizes to fit whatever space you have to play with. Ranging from W90 x D45 x H180 cm to W90 x D60 x H220 cm. £94.99 – £119.99 from amazon.co.uk
For less money you could opt for this 5 Tier Racking Shelf which has stronger shelves with a capacity of 175 Kg per shelf. The reviews are reassuring and, at £42.99, it’s unlikely you’ll get much more for your money elsewhere? The beauty of this kind of shelving is that you can adapt it to your needs – as seen here as one tall unit or configured as a storage bench.
If you need a few units then this deal via eBay looks pretty good. You get 2x 5 adjustable shelf units and a workbench for £154.80. The shelves are chipboard but they claim they can hold 175 Kg each – which is quite impressive.
For very heavy-duty you’ll probably want to consider an all metal unit which is going to be more expensive. This heavy-duty four shelf unit from Draper is made from high quality steel and is suitable for industrial or domestic use. Each mesh metal shelf can hold up to 364 Kg which should be enough to withstand just about anything? Priced at around £260 it’s not the cheapest option by any means but nothing worth having comes cheap?
This 6 shelf unit by Raaco is made from galvanised steel, including the shelf units which can hold up to 120 Kg each. £122 from amazon.co.uk and not bad value for a tall, sturdy shelf unit.
Rb Boss Shelf Kit – a range of heavy-duty boltless shelving which is easy to assemble and available in many different sizes. Priced from £49.99 to £199.99 from wickes.co.uk
AmazonBasics Heavy Duty Shelving – a heavy-duty aluminium frame shelving unit. Available as vertical single post 5-shelf unit or as a double-post unit which can be used vertically or horizontally. W152 × D61 × H198 cm. £144.92 from amazon.co.uk
Although you’ll find lots of alternatives I think I’ve covered the basics in this kind of price range? So go for an all metal construction if your budget will allow and compare the claimed weight load bearing capacity given for each.
