Sometimes the best discoveries come about when you’re not really looking and this was the case today when I took a shortcut through the kitchen department of my local John Lewis store. What caught my eye were these nifty storage containers by a company called OXO – no connection with the stock cube people, btw.
What’s original about these containers is the way the lid is sealed with a push button mechanism rather than a conventional screw lid or the common kind of sealed lid which simply pulls on and off (this works OK until the seal wears down a bit with constant use and loses it’s air-tightness). With this new design you should always get a good airtight seal.
I also like the modern chunky design and the fact that several containers can easily be stacked together in order to save space. They are available in 12 sizes and can be bought individually or in sets – *note at the time of writing the 10 and 12 piece sets are only available via the US.
The only downside really is the cost, they aren’t cheap – the smallest container is priced at around £7 and the large cookie jar above is £17.
Although the seal (or, silicone gasket, to use its proper name) is dishwasher safe you are advised to hand wash the containers and to remove the gasket first. You can wash this and re-apply it without losing any long term effectiveness. Use in microwaves is not recommended btw.
