These oak shoe cabinets from John Lewis have a sleek, contemporary style which will appeal to many. The problem with some premium shoe cabinets is that you may like the style but the size may not suit your needs. With this range you do at least have the choice of 3 different sizes; one of which should be suitable?
The low cabinet is a 2 door unit with space for up to 18 pairs of shoes. The top section also includes a hidden shelf which is handy for small items. The small holes you can see at the back are so you can secure the cabinet to the wall behind. Measures: H100 x W100 x D26cm. Price £350
The tall version is a slimmer 3 door cabinet with space for 15 pairs of shoes and also include a hidden shelf in the top section. Dimensions: H138 x W67 x D26cm. Price £350
Although described as oak units the only solid wood pieces are the square section pieces which make up the outer frame and the drawer handles. The panels, including the drawer fronts, which make up most of the unit, are MDF with an oak veneer. This is fairly common but a point to note nonetheless. The inside sections of the drawer are also MDF but finished with a white foil.
The opening mechanisms are made from white plastic, fixed with small screws which will work loose over time because screws do not grip MDF as well as they do normal wood. Again this is quite a common problem but another thing to consider?
If you like the style of these cabinets, as I do, and prefer your furniture to be ready-assembled, which these are, then by all means go for it. But, as you’ve probably already guessed, I think these units are over-priced for what they are.
